As a collection of students, teachers and parents, we envision a different future for the 50,000 students that suffer through the competitive, isolating experience of VCE each year. The VCE is a fair system; that is a well-researched fact. The scaling allows for equity and fairness even when people do different subjects. However, the VCE is not a supportive system. It has competition at its core, which causes extreme stress and has a devastating impact on students’ mental health. Do we want a system to be fair at the cost of education quality and mental health?
